Prava Šapa 2015.

This is my most recent, and one of my favorite projects. Prava Šapa (The Right Paw) is an organisation which helps to give stray cats a home. I shot their 2015. calendar, and the idea was to have photographs that would show typical problems Prava Šapa faces.

Each photo features a Croatian celebrity (see if you can guess who’s who 😉 ), a volunteer from Prava Šapa, and of course – a cat. 🙂

In June 2014. I was at a photography workshop in Poland. A part of it was visiting Aushwitz, and I think that I don’t really have to explain what sort of emotions that brought forward.
Still, posting something like this on a website that is here to promote my work is not something everybody would do, but I just had to. The real reason is, when I came home and converted all the images to black and white, it was as though they became alive. Like all these decades that have passed have been obliterated, and suddenly all this memories are here, and real. That realisation was so powerful for me, that I just had to share it.
The last photograph in the slideshow is not from Auschwitz. It’s from Krakow, and it’s a photo of Oscar Schindler’s factory. I think the significance is grasped by a quote from my favourite writer…

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers

The Artistic Process

These images were done a long time ago, some of them at the very beginning of my photographic endeavours. I’ve tried to use them in showing how the process of creating photographs (including these) actually works. Or, at least how it works for me.

  • It all starts with an idea
  • Then you see the light
  • And it immerses you
  • Deeper and deeper
  • Until a whole new Universe opens in front of you
  • New ideas keep splashing upon you
  • They keep twisting your mind
  • Swirling in your brain
  • Until suddenly, a depression stabs you
  • You can try running from it
  • But it's useless
  • All you can do is wait
  • Until you see a light at the end of the tunnel
  • And everything falls back into its place
  • Ideas come back
  • Stronger than ever
  • Overwhelming you
  • But everything has an end
